Volunteer Position Openings

Locomotive Engineer / up to 2 shifts a month

Locomotive Engineer shifts vary. Scheduling will be based on volunteer preference, but we do require a minimum of once per month to remain active. Shifts are broken down per season, per engine, per available shift:

Winter Season (November- Mid March): Diesel only.
Full day shift: 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. Fire up: 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. Shut down: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Spring/Summer/Fall Seasons (End of March to October): Steam Season.
Steam Engine: Full day shift: 7:00 am to 5:30 pm Fire up: 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. Shut down shift: 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm.

Diesel Engine: Full day shift: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Fire up: 10:00 to 1:00 pm. Shut down: 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Maintenance Crew

Maintenance/Machine work shop. Tuesday Crew – Various amount of hours

Our Tuesday crew works on all the locomotive maintenance, as well as maintenance on the passenger cars, buildings, and all other miscellaneous maintenance.

Track maintenance is always an ongoing project, and one that always needs extra hands.

Not retired yet and can’t do Tuesdays? No worries, there is always maintenance work to take care at the railroad. Let us know your skills, and we will place you with the right project.

Gardener/Grounds Keeper

Hours are scheduled as needed to take care of the garden area and grounds. Hours are flexible to work with any schedule. Work will entail getting the garden ready to plant flowers, planting flowers, and keeping up with watering and upkeep. Grounds work will include cleaning up the station area on the tracks, picking up leaves, and making sure everything looks ready for operations.

BBQ/Catering Help

Barbecue shifts per weekend are up to 4.5 hours. Scheduling will be based on volunteer preference, but we do require a minimum of once per month to remain active. Volunteers can sign up for specific dates per month. Catering help are for BJWRR special events and will require shifts of up to 4 hours. Dates are specified by March for special events throughout the summer. Special events include cooking for Pancake Breakfast, Cooking for Pasta Dinner, and other food related events that have yet to be determined.

PR/Marketing

Volunteering shifts will meet a variety of needs. A dedicated person will be required to volunteer several hours per month to get the word out about Bill Jones Wildcat Railroad and W.E. Bill Mason Carousel. Persons will work closely with the CEO and COO and will include creative writing and reporting skills. The person will be in charge of press releases, post to social media, work closely with the local newspapers, network with local schools and local organizations.

Volunteer Relations

  • Volunteer Coordinator: This person will volunteer several hours or more on Tuesdays. Tuesday is Volunteer Work Day. The person will meet and greet all new and interested volunteers to answer questions, fill out paperwork, give tours and assign work assignments. Coordinate with department heads for volunteer work assignments. Participate in recruiting volunteers.
  • Education Coordinator: This person will volunteer several hours or more per week. Initially help create and administer small educational class and tours dedicated to the history and preservation of trains and carousels for various age groups. Participate in reaching out to schools and local organization to schedule a class or tour with rides on the train and carousel.
  • Grant Writer/Fund Raiser: Grant writer will solely focus on writing grants for specific areas. This work will encompass specific project that the railroad will need to apply for grants. Fund raiser will put together campaign to raise funds for specific items. This work will only come up in the event the railroad needs to raise extra funds.
